Fresh Girl
Jaira Placide   (More from this author)
Roman

Fresh Girl - Haitian Book Centre - Haitian Books in Creole, English and French, francophone litterature - Cliquer pour agrandir Jaira Placide has really outdone herself.

At first, reading "Fresh Girl” was confusing because of the frequent dreams, and bouncing from Haiti to New York many times. Then, the mysterious web begins to unravel itself as I read more about Mardi Desravines (the protagonist) and her lifestyle. On the surface, she is just like any other Haitian child in New York. Her family includes a sister (Serina) a mother, a father, a grandmother, her uncle Perrin and her aunt Wilda. However, deep inside her lays a secret, a past experience. A so traumatizing one that it forces Mardi to sleep with rocks on her mattress to keep away the memories that disguise themselves as dreams. It forces Mardi to hurt herself.

To her family, Mardi's problems are small and unimportant, a bad boy named Ike, or trying to impress Santos, a flirtatious crush. Her secret comes to them as a shock but more shocking is the emotion and frustration Mardi has dealt with. With the support and love of her family, Mardi sets out a spiritual quest to heal herself and move on.

Reading about the trials and tribulations of Mardi taught me how hard it really is to keep your head up when the sky is dumped on your shoulders, but it also taught me about family, whose love and support will help you move mountains.
